The Prince Edward Island (PEI) Off-Highway Vehicle Act is legislation that governs the use of off-highway vehicles (OHVs) such as all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), dirt bikes, and snowmobiles within the province. The Act outlines rules related to the operation, registration, insurance, and safety requirements for these vehicles. It sets minimum age limits for operators, mandates the use of helmets, and requires that vehicles be registered and insured if used on designated trails or public land. The Act also restricts where OHVs can be operated, prohibiting their use on most public roads and in environmentally sensitive areas. Enforcement of the Act is carried out by law enforcement and conservation officers, with penalties for non-compliance including fines and possible seizure of vehicles. The goal of the Act is to ensure public safety, protect the environment, and support responsible recreational use.
